The terrible and glorious twelfth year. The Battle of Borodino (part 1)
August 26 (September 7), 1812 afternoon Battle of Borodino (afternoon) E. Beauharnais' troops, having concentrated on Borodino and Kurgan Heights, shifted to the south, leaving only a tenth of their forces on the extreme left flank. Early in the morning, the Cossacks, who were watching the enemy, discovered the small number of his troops in this area. In some ways, it was justified. Opposite, Russian troops were stationed on the high bank behind the Koloch: it seemed pointless to attack them, and there was no great danger from them. It is no coincidence that Kutuzov, having made sure that Napoleon's main attack was concentrated on the left flank, transferred two infantry and two cavalry corps to the right there and to the center. But the Russian commander-in-chief still had troops left to harass the enemy's exposed rear.

At eleven o'clock, Beauharnais' positions north of Borodino were attacked by the forces of the 1st Reserve Cavalry Corps under the command of F. P. Uvarov and the Flying Cossack Corps under the command of M. I. Platov. Prince Eugene was forced to postpone the assault on the central redoubt and rushed with the Italian Royal Guard to repel an unexpected raid by the Russian cavalry. The sabotage carried out by Uvarov and Platov did not cause much damage or changes to the plans of the enemy's command (which later caused Kutuzov's displeasure), but more than two hours were gained – the Grand Army was able to launch a new assault on Kurgan Heights only at three o'clock in the afternoon.

At 15:00, the full force of Napoleon's attacks concentrated on the Kurgan battery: four infantry divisions and the entire heavy cavalry of the Grand Army fell on the redoubt, knocking out parts of the 24 Infantry Division. But Bonaparte's troops were not destined to advance further. Just think: at four o'clock in the afternoon, Napoleon's army controlled all the key areas of the battlefield - Borodino, Kurgan Height, Semenovskoye and Semenovskie flushes, Utitsky forest and Utitsky Kurgan, but the battle lasted about three more hours, as a result of which the sides practically did not move a meter!
The 4th, 6th and 7th Infantry, 2nd and 3rd reserve cavalry corps at the central redoubt, the 5th Guards Infantry Corps at Semenovsky, the 2nd and 3rd Infantry, the 4th Reserve Cavalry Corps and the Moscow Militia on the Old Smolenskaya Road are all they stood to the death. Russian Russian and French cavalry launched endless attacks and counterattacks, the impregnable squares of the Russian infantry, the guns were exploding from overheating, generals were dying, and they didn't move. After six o'clock in the evening, the attacks stopped along the entire front, only artillery cannonade and rifle fire continued. The troops held their positions, everything quieted down only in the dead of night.
